Arrival day is usually a quiet day for everyone as people fly in at different times. If you want to arrive a day early (on 24 June) for our memorable Mara Magic Safairi, we’ve got an extra night’s hotel room for you, and we’ll go on a day tour of Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Giraffe House, and Karen Blixen Museum on 25 June while others fly in and get settled. We’ll start after breakfast and visit each of these locations, with a lunch stop during the day:

Dave Sheldrick Wildife Trust ( operates the most successful elephant rescue and rehab in the world. They embrace all measures that complement the conservation, preservation and protection of wildlife including anti-poaching, safe-guarding the natural environment, enhancing community awareness and providing veterinary assistance to animals in need. We’ll visit for an hour, watching the orphans eating, playing and enjoying a mud or dust bath. A keeper will give us a tour and talk through our visit, telling stories about the different orphans and explaining the process of raising milk-dependent baby elephants. You can adopt an orphan, too, and contribute to the care of that baby until its release into the wild.

Giraffe Centre ( is world famous for the preservation and conservation of the Rothschild Giraffe, an endangered subspecies found only in the grasslands of East Africa. The Giraffe Centre educates people from around the world, especially the children of Kenya for whom these animals are a birthright. Those giraffes at the centre that can be released into the wild will be reintroduced to a safe environment. We’ll be able to meet and feed the permanent residents of the Centre, and maybe even get a kiss!

Karen Blixen Museum ( is at the foot of the Ngong hills, about which Karen Blixen wrote her best-selling book, Out of Africa, using the pen name Isak Dinesen. Baroness Blixen moved from Denmark to Kenya with her husband and built a coffee farm. After the failure of her marriage, she became involved with Denys Finch Hatton, a pilot for big game hunters. This became the blockbuster movie starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep—if you haven’t watched it in a while, refresh your memory by watching it again! We’ll tour her home, see the coffee drying shed, look at her art work, and learn more about this amazing, trail-blazing woman’s life.
