You read the book and saw the movie Gorillas in the Mist. You’ve always wanted to see the deep green mountain forests that Dian Fossey trekked, meet Digit’s relatives and sit in the presence of a Silverback Gorilla, listen to the trees talk and the wind whisper as the mist winds through the valleys of the Virungas…now you can…

Eagle Eye Safaris is going to Rwanda to meet primates: endangered Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys on a short 5-day trip that will leave you amazed.

We’ll meet in Kigali, then transfer to the iconic Parc National des Volcans for a Gorilla Trek like no other! The light is magical here, and the gorillas are used to humans so they will relax and play while we snap away. This is where Dian Fossey did the work detailed in the book that brought Mountain Gorillas into world consciousness in 1983. Fellow primatologists, ecologists, and conservationists Amy Vedder and Bill Webber began a mission to save these incredible primates from extinction by conceiving the Mountain Gorilla Project in 1979. The Project created a new local economy, scuttling the government’s plans to raze the park for a cattle ranch. Instead of slashing the forests for farming, people now work as guides, Rangers, porters, and staff for ecotourists, creating immense value in preserving the wild mountain forests and its creatures. Amy’s Gorilla Project is credited for saving the mountain gorilla population and helping it thrive, growing from 260 gorillas to over 1000 today. You might want to read the book “In the Kingdom of Gorillas” by Amy and Bill before you travel for a different insight into the challenges of saving a species.

We’ll trek endangered Golden Monkeys, too. Their habit was also saved by Vedder and Webber. They are a subspecies of the Sykes Monkey or “Blue Monkey,” and are only found in this part of the Virungas. These playful, inquisitive frolickers are beautiful with amber eyes, golden face, and a golden mantle across their backs. We’ll hope for infants and juveniles, but even the adults are interested in people and often come quite close.

We’ve got nature walks in store for you, and a cultural visit at a local village that will entertain and educate you as we meet the people and wildlife of Rwanda.

Ernest and Karen will be by your side, helping with camera settings in every situation. We want you to go home with great memories!

We’ve curated this trek during Rwanda’s dry season. We’ll range in altitude, so please pack layers suitable for crisp mountain air and warm valley temperatures.

* Health Considerations:

Rwanda is a Yellow Fever and Malaria country. The government of Rwanda requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if travelling from a country with risk of yellow fever or a country with an active yellow fever outbreak. Further details available at  http://moh.gov.rw/index.php?id=34&tx_ttnews%5btt_news%5d=633&cHash=31c90fd13b953240c27d812275643392.   See more information on yellow fever recommendations and requirements for Rwanda.

Note:

Yellow fever vaccine availability in the United States is currently limited. If you need to be vaccinated before your trip, you may need to travel some distance and schedule your appointment well in advance.

Typhoid and Hepatitis A vaccinations are also recommended. You should also have an up to date Tetanus shot before any travel.

* Electric Adapter:

Rwanda uses Type C and J plugs. You may be able to use an adapter instead of a converter. To be sure, check the label on the appliance. Some appliances never need a converter. If the label states ‘INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60 Hz’ the appliance can be used in all countries in the world. Devices like this include most laptops and phones, most recently produced battery chargers, and many small, electrical gadgets, especially those designed for world travel. Here is an example of an international converter for Uganda: https://www.amazon.com/Power-Plug-Adapter-International-SublimeWare/dp/B01N59M473
